The Rise of Night Fishing in the City of Gentle People
The peaceful charm of Dumaguete City continues to evolve, and now, a new nighttime adventure is capturing the attention of locals, tourists, and fishing enthusiasts alike. Known as the “City of Gentle People,” Dumaguete is not only becoming a destination for food, culture, and seaside relaxation — it is now slowly turning into one of the most exciting urban fishing spots in the Visayas.
With the almost-finished long walk boulevard stretching beautifully along the coast, the area has transformed into more than just a scenic place for jogging, walking, family bonding, and late-night meetups. Every evening, under the city lights and beside the calming sound of the waves, anglers line up with rods and reels, hoping for the next big catch.
From experienced fishermen to first-time hobbyists, the fishing community in Dumaguete continues to grow fast. Teenagers, parents, working professionals, and even young kids can now be seen spending their nights casting lines into the deep waters beside the boulevard. What used to be a simple hangout area is now becoming a thriving fishing hotspot.
Giant Trevally Now Roaming Dumaguete Waters
One of the most talked-about catches recently posted across social media is the powerful Giant Trevally, also known among anglers as the GT or “Trevs.” This aggressive predator fish is famous for its strength, explosive fight, and incredible speed. Catching one is considered a major achievement for many anglers.
Locals have also reported sightings of sharks slowly appearing near the area, a strong sign that predator fish are actively hunting around Dumaguete’s coastal waters. For fishing enthusiasts, this only makes the boulevard even more exciting. The presence of predators usually means healthy baitfish activity and a rich marine ecosystem.
Aside from GTs, anglers have reportedly caught barracudas, swordfish, and several other species during nighttime sessions. Every night feels unpredictable — and that is exactly what keeps the fishing community coming back.
My Personal Giant Trevally Catch
On April 29, 2026, around 10:15 PM, I became one of the lucky anglers to experience the thrill of landing a Giant Trevally right at the Dumaguete Boulevard.
After an intense fight filled with powerful runs and adrenaline-pumping moments, I successfully landed a 3-kilo GT. It was one of the most unforgettable fishing experiences I’ve ever had.
The excitement, the screams from nearby anglers, and the sound of the drag peeling off the reel created a moment I will never forget. For every angler, there is always that one catch that reminds you why you love fishing — and this was definitely mine.
What makes the experience even more special is the location itself. Imagine catching a hard-fighting predator fish in the middle of a vibrant city boulevard surrounded by people enjoying the night. It truly shows how unique Dumaguete has become.
