Midnight Fishing Session at Sibulan Port

At around 12:30 AM, after spending some time casting at the famous Dumaguete Boulevard, I decided to transfer to one of my favorite fishing spots — the Port of Sibulan. This place has become special to me because of my unforgettable first encounter with a powerful pelagic fish, the King Mackerel.

Months ago, I hooked what I believed was a massive King Mackerel near the port. The fight lasted for almost a minute, full of explosive runs and powerful pulls. Unfortunately, my braided line was not prepared for that kind of monster. The braid snapped during the fight, and the fish escaped into the darkness.

That painful loss became my motivation.

Since then, I upgraded my fishing tackle, improved my setup, and kept coming back to Sibulan Port hoping for another encounter with that giant King Mackerel. Every cast carried the excitement of redemption.

But this time, something unexpected happened.

Instead of the King Mackerel, a hard-fighting Giant Trevally smashed the lure aggressively. The strike was instant and violent. The GT made several powerful runs, testing my upgraded setup and patience. Thankfully, the new tackle held perfectly, and after an intense battle, I successfully landed the fish.

For shore anglers in Negros Oriental, moments like this are priceless.

Why Sibulan Port Is Becoming a Popular Fishing Spot

The Port of Sibulan is slowly gaining attention among local fishing enthusiasts because of its access to deeper waters and active pelagic species. Anglers have reported encounters with:

  • Giant Trevally (GT)
  • King Mackerel
  • Barracuda
  • Scads and baitfish schools
  • Other seasonal predators

Night fishing in the area has become increasingly popular due to cooler temperatures, calmer surroundings, and active feeding fish during late hours.

The location also offers easy shore access, making it ideal for lure casting, light jigging, and ultralight fishing sessions.

Upcoming Developments by the LGU Sibulan

The Local Government Unit of Sibulan is also expected to continue improving the port and nearby coastal areas as part of tourism and local development initiatives. With ongoing improvements in infrastructure, lighting, and public spaces, Sibulan may soon become not only a transportation hub but also a recognized recreational destination for locals and visiting anglers.

As fishing communities continue to grow in Negros Oriental, places like Sibulan Port have the potential to become future hotspots for sustainable coastal tourism and night fishing activities.

Shore Fishing in Negros Oriental Continues to Grow

Fishing culture in Dumaguete City and nearby towns continues to expand rapidly. More young anglers, working professionals, and even families are now spending their nights casting lures along ports, boulevards, and coastal roads.

The thrill of hooking a powerful fish from the shoreline keeps the community alive and passionate.

For me, this Giant Trevally was more than just another catch. It was proof that persistence, preparation, and patience eventually pay off.

And who knows — maybe one night, that giant King Mackerel will return for a rematch.
