It is one of the oldest historical structure built on 1811 located at the heart of Dumaguete City, standing near St Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral which known as one of the oldest stone church in the Negros Oriental. The structure was listed as one of the tourist spots in Negros Oriental as well. The name “Dumaguete” came from the word “daggit” which means to steal or to snatch. This has been coined since during the 1700’s, pirates go to Dumaguete because of its natural beauty that somewhat has a power to snatch their attention and visit the place or settle permanently. In 1811, it is being used as a watch towerto warn townsfolk of these raiding pirates.
This structure has three floors, and the top floor is where you can find the bell that is being rung that signifies a start of a vigil or a mass at the neighboring cathedral. At the top still, you can see a scenic view of Dumaguete and smell the fresh breeze of sea air. Due to its proximity to the Dumaguete city public market and the downtown area, traffic around the Bell Tower tend to be heavy on the peak hours between 9 am and 5 pm according to locals. The place is generally always packed with people, milling about near its base.Alongside the bell tower are souvenir shops that sell religious items and candles. These candles can be lighted underneath the belfry tower where a “grotto” of the Virgin Mary is situated to pray and have a solemn moment with God. Devotees regularly light candles at the grotto area to profess their faith or to say their prayer requests.
