Dumaguete City - Buglasan Festival

Hailed as the Festival of Festivals, Buglasan. It is an event for Negrenses to commemorate the rich culture of the whole Negros province. It is a symbol of unity through tourism and one of the biggest events here in Dumaguete City. According to dumagueteunitown.com, in the olden times, the island of Negros was referred to as Buglas, after the tall reeds that were predominant in the area. A map said to have been drawn by Diego Lope POVEDANO dated 1572 shows an island named Buglas Insulis. The Buglasan Festival named after Negros island's beginnings.

Dumaguete City

A laid back from the bustle and hustle in the busy metropolis. From the humble and charming island of Negros Oriental specifically in the capital city of the province, Still in the Visayas region; on the southeastern half of the Negros Island, nestled the gentle and fascinating metropolis of Dumaguete. It’s been dubbed as “ The city of Gentle People” as the phrase suggest, the locals are naturally accommodating and hospitable.

Additionally, it is also referred as the University town and it has earned the distinction of being known as the “center of learning in the South,” In fact, the city boast to have the country’s first Protestant University university and the first American university in Asia, Silliman University. Further, the city also houses two century old academic institutions, whose been tested by time and change, St. Paul University-Dumaguete and Negros Oriental State University. Furthermore, the city itself is a cosmopolitan and a culturally diverse city.

Dumaguete City

A day in Dumaguete is never been complete without witnessing the adorable sunset in the boulevard along the beautiful promenade of Rizal boulevard under the shade and the caress of the century old acacia trees along the lovely ground of the boulevard. Moreover, the city’s slow-paced appeal is enhanced with a handful of tourist attractions worth going, a charismatic vibe of the city and above all, the amiable people, that flashes a warm smile for everyone. That’s why some expats and tourists linger longer in my city.

Pigging out in the city of Gentle People.

Sans Rival, one of the hubs for sweet tooth people and a haven for a buttery treat. A crowd favorite for both locals and tourist, There you can have a deep bite of their famous silvanas and sans rival. You can also try their other offering.

You can also explore Dumaguete’s finest restaurants to pigging out with personalized service and a wallet friendly price. To name some of my personal choices are Gaby’s Bistro, Lab-as restuarant, HayahayTreehouse, Neva’s Pizza, Don Atilano and many others that one may find interesting. A real value for money and a time well spent. Not to mention, the food hawker along the boulevard, assembles at the twilight until the dusk of dawn, offers a variety of local staple food in Philippine streets and the infamous Ballot and tempura.

Silliman University Hall
However, what makes it apart from the others is the incomparable venue it has, situated at the iconic Silliman Hall as background with the Boulevard on the foreground accented with the relaxing breeze of the orient sea.

Getting there: Highways and byways along the picturesque scenery.

This coastal hometown of mine is tourist friendly as its strategically accessible by all mediums of transportation of your preference. Available transportation is by plane, bus, or boat and the fare is really cheap.

Prefer to go by Ceres bus it usually takes about 4 to 5 hours from Cebu South Bus Terminal. I really enjoy those times spent sitting watching the scenery outside, those picturesque views of both side either of those pristine and luscious mountains you can pass by with or the alluring and mystifying azul blue seas of the Taton straight with powdery white sea shores is such a delightful sight of paradise. Also, as we progress come near closer towards the Liloan port in Santander, Cebu city, one can fill ones stomach with various delicious and delectable local food products in each town if one is lucky enough that one vendor can get into the bus to sell.

Normally, the fare of Air conditioned or non Air conditioned buses cost about Philippine Peso (Php) 170.00 – 300.00. One can choose either traveling with Ceres Bus or with van for hire. Although both ways will actually work fine. If you have luggage and more time to burn, I would suggest you take the bus with Dumaguete (or Bayawan) signage in Cebu South Bus terminal. These buses go straight to Dumaguete via Bato-Tampi. Since the route is a bit longer and the bus will go on board a RORO, you have to shell out more peanuts though, roughly Php 80 – a hundred bucks. Van for rent is also available if one prefers to.

I am humbled of calling this at home, a place I keep longing and a tourist keeps seeking. Thus, Dumaguete my sweet escape.

I have shared the means, now pack your bags and brace yourself to fall in lovewith my city.
